Stömp formed in the mid 1990’s when bassist Martin Appleby and fiddle player Lisa Sture from the defunct Melons For Ecstasy joined forces with concertina player/flautist Sheena Masson. Having settled on the name Stomp they discovered that a percussive dance outfit was starting to take the world by storm under the same name. It was decided to add an umlaut to the ‘o’ to differentiate the band from the bin-lid bashers. Only a modicum of confusion has resulted, mainly from MCs who love to try out their German pronunciation. Rest assured that the name rhymes with ‘romp’.
By the time I joined in 1998 to replace Lisa, original drummer Paul Sissely and guitarist Jon Taylor had been replaced by Rob Gifford and Jeff Dent respectively. This line up produced the well received CD ‘Machine Without Horses’. Unable to play either the didgeridoo or the spoons like Lisa did, I added mandolin and subsequently electric guitar to the mix.
Jeff announced his departure in 2000 after a great Sidmouth, and for a while things were a bit rocky. There was talk of a name change. Bob Thomas (ex Silly-Wizard) filled the guitar chair for a couple of years but it became clear that his musical style was not suited to the way Stömp needed to go. Bob’s replacement, Andrew King, has brought the ship back on course. The band is busy and a new CD, ‘I Claim My Five Pounds’ is now available.
